Ganesha is the name of a Hindu god of wisdom, prophecy, and the removal of obstacles. His name comes from the Sanskrit words gana, which means "common people", and isha, which means "Lord". This translates to "Lord of the People" or "Lord of the Ganas", as Ganesha is the leader of the ganas, Shiva's goblin hosts. Ganesha is also known by other names, including Ganesh, Ganapati, Vinayaka, and Vighnesha.
Ganesha is often depicted with a pot belly, holding Indian sweets, and riding a large rat. His vehicle symbolizes his ability to overcome anything to get what he wants. His body parts also have symbolic meanings:
- Wide mouth: Represents the natural human desire to enjoy life
- Large ears: Signify that a good person listens to others and assimilates ideas
- Trunk: Can hold anything, representing the need for adaptability and efficiency in life
